Self-Study The official documents about the self-study process are the NASD Membership Procedures and the advisory and optional documents Supplement IV to the NASD Futures Sourcebook entitled Creating Your Self-Study and Optional Supplemental Questions for Self-Study.
DESCRIPTIONSelf-study is a process in which the faculty and administrative and governing bodies declare what they want the dance unit to be and make their own appraisal of its present accomplishments and future potential. This is done with reference to NASD standards and the institution's own standards and aspirations. The goal of the process is to understand, evaluate, and improve, not merely to defend what exists. Students, alumni, and others both on- and off-campus are involved.
The self-study process eventually results in a document that can be used for both institutional and accreditation purposes.
CONTENT The Self-Study must include a discussion of Purposes and Operations; Instructional Programs; and Evaluation, Planning, and Projections.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSIn what format should the Self-Study and supportive materials be submitted? The Self-Study and supportive material should be prepared according to guidelines articulated in the NASD Membership Procedures.
What is a curricular chart? A curricular chart presents specific degree or program content by major area, supportive coursework in dance, general education coursework, and electives. It includes the course number, title, and credit allotment for every course in the program of study. Course areas are calculated as a percentage of the minimum program requirement.
What is the difference between coursework in the major area and supportive coursework? The answer depends on the goals, objectives, and content of the curriculum. Differences are articulated by degree program in the NASD Handbook.
How and where do we count electives? Do we list all elective coursework? All electives must be counted and included in curricular charts. If applicable, a distinction should be made between dance and non-dance electives, or major and non-major electives within dance.
How is a credit hour defined? Credit and time requirement standards and guidelines may be found in the NASD Handbook under Dance Program Components: Credit and Time Requirements.
What are the association's due dates for submission of accreditation materials? All accreditation deadlines are specified in the NASD Membership Procedures. When necessary, extensions may be requested from the National Office Staff.
When is our next on-site review? A member institution's next on-site review is published in the NASD Directory in parentheses just after the institution's title designation. As an example, (2010-2011) means that the institution's next on-site review is required to take place at the institution's discretion any time during the Fall of 2010 or the Spring of 2011 during a period when classes are in session; administrators, faculty, and students are accessible; and exams are not scheduled.
