COLLEEN T. DUNAGAN is Professor and Chair of Dance at California State University, Long Beach. Since joining the institution in 2002 as a faculty member, she has served in various capacities including as Graduate Advisor and Director of the summer Master of Arts in Dance program, Assistant Chair of the Department of Dance, Chair of the General Education Governing Committee, Vice-Chair of the Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement Committee, Chair of COTA’s Curriculum Committee, and as a member of department, college, and university search committees.
Professor Dunagan’s research on dance in media appears in several publications, including Dance in U.S. Popular Culture, Dance Research Journal, The Oxford Handbook of Dance and the Popular Screen, Movies Moves and Music, and her monograph, Consuming Dance: Choreography & Advertising (2018). Her research on Susanne Langer’s concept of the virtual appears in Topoi: An International Journal of Philosophy. She has presented her research at the Dance Studies Association, Popular Culture Association, Susanne K. Langer Circle, and Society of Cinema and Media Studies. In addition, Professor Dunagan has served on the Board of Directors for the Society of Dance History Scholars and the Awards Committee for the Dance Studies Association. She is a member of the Conference Committee for the 2026 annual conference of the Dance Studies Association.
Professor Dunagan serves NASD as a visiting evaluator.
Professor Dunagan holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Dance History and Theory from the University of California, Riverside, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance and English Literature from Hamilton College.
