NORA AMBROSIO is a Professor of Dance at Slippery Rock University, where she has been a member of the faculty since 1988. She teaches dance composition, dance in contemporary times, creative dance for children, teaching of dance, senior capstone, and university seminar. Professor Ambrosio served as Chair of the Department of Dance from 1998 – 2011. Her publications include Learning about Dance (8th edition, Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company, IA, 2018), which is used in dance departments throughout the U.S. and Canada and has sold over 400,000 copies. A new online version has also recently been published. Kendall/Hunt also published her latest text, The Excellent Instructor and the Teaching of Dance Technique (3rd edition, 2018). An experienced grant writer, she has secured numerous grants for the Department of Dance, the SRU Kaleidoscope Arts Festival, and her own artistic endeavors.
Professor Ambrosio is active in the downtown revitalization of the Village at Slippery Rock and has been instrumental in bringing the arts to the downtown area and securing grant and private funding for commissioned public art pieces. She choreographs for both student and professional venues, and for many years created dance/theatre work, as part of Ambrosio/Skeele Dance/Theatre.
She served NASD as Chair of the Commission on Accreditation from 2015 – 2018, and as Member of the Commission from 2007 – 2014. She was elected to the Board of Directors in 2018.
Professor Ambrosio earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance from Smith College, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an Associate of Arts degree from Nassau Community College, New York.
