Simone Linhares Ferro

Simone Linhares Ferro is Chair of the Department of Dance at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, a position she has held since 2017. She joined the faculty in 2001 and served as M.F.A. program director prior to her current appointment

A choreographer, educator, and researcher, Professor Ferro has collaborated with visual artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, and architects in the Milwaukee and Midwestern artistic communities on a wide range of thematic approaches including social justice, civic and community engagement, and ecology. For the past 14 years, she has traveled to Brazil to research popular culture and the traditional Bumba- meu-boi folk festivities in the Northeastern state of Maranhão. Currently, she and her research partner are writing on the topic of Leadership of Women in the Popular Culture of Maranhão. Professor Ferro is in her second term as the president of the Wisconsin Dance Council. She is the recipient of several awards, including a 2013 University of Iowa Alumni Fellowship

Professor Ferro serves NASD as a visiting evaluator.

A native of São Paulo, Brazil, after a professional career as soloist with dance companies in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Geneva, Switzerland, Professor Ferro completed her Master of Fine Arts in Dance at the University of Iowa. She received certification in Laban Movement Analysis from Columbia College Chicago.
